Classic Greek Revival Captain's Home...this beautiful, one-of-a-kind home in the far West End on Commercial Street was originally built in 1840 and has remained in the care of its present owners for over 40 years. When it was purchased in the 1970's, they undertook a two year renovation/restoration of the home and property. The entire house was gutted, properly insulated and rebuilt with plaster walls and ceilings. The house was re-wired and re-plumbed at that time. The foundation was newly poured in some places and reinforced with bunkers in others. A two car garage and guest apartment were added as were the lower and upper decks. The kitchen was designed to include a large walk-in cook's pantry and the living space was reconfigured. While the exterior was restored to its understated integrity, large beams were notched and raised into place in the living room to create an open floor plan. A new heating system, custom milled windows to replicate the originals, and hand laid, screwed and bunged red oak flooring was installed throughout. A Saltillo tile floor was laid in the kitchen and front entry. A seven flue chimney, three Malicoat fireplaces and an artistic brick wall in the upstairs guest bath were custom built. The front yard is bordered on the east and west sides by lilac trees and the grounds were landscaped by the current owners who are avid gardeners. There is a 119 year old quince tree, one of very few left in town, that thrives on the Point St. side of the property. This 3 bedroom, 3 1/2 bath home with guest apartment has many unique features and has been lovingly maintained. One immediately sees that this home was solidly built with fine craftsmanship and attention to details including period hardware, cedar closets, bookcases, window seats, a ship's knee in the kitchen and a hand-fashioned arched passageway from the entry foyer to the living room. The hand carved turtle in the end of a beam as you walk upstairs is the trademark of Bill Fitts and Turtle Woodworks and distinguishes this home as one built by some of the most talented artisans of the day. The owners have continued to make improvements to their home over the 40+ years they have lived there. In more recent years, the roof was replaced in kind with red cedar shingles, a 5 zone irrigation system was installed as was a new Kohler whole house generator. The original furnace was replaced three years ago as was a double walled oil tank. In addition to the garage, there is off-street parking for three cars and this property is connected to the town sewer. There aren't many of these gems left that beautifully blend old style charm with creative building techniques and today's modern conveniences.
